When you think of the word “hero,” who comes to your mind? A person in the military, fire or police department, a doctor, pastor, teacher, coach or mentor in your life? Maybe Spiderman if you’re my son Mark, aka Skippy, or perhaps a parent or loved one. I know for me, my dad is my hero because he is always there for me, gives me solid biblical counsel, loves me, and the list goes on and on. Speaking of heroes, do you believe that the path to a better society starts with us? I do, and the only way we will become heroes for God’s kingdom, our families, our church and our community is by what David declared in a certain chapter of Psalms that we will look at this Father’s Day. I’m titling my message, Unlikely Heroes - Have one thing in common. We will be taking a break from our seven-part series called, The 7 - Going from Darkness to the Light, this Father’s Day Sunday, June 16th, as I preach a special message not just for men, but something that is applicable for every one of us. I’ll be preaching this message in both our traditional service at 8:00 a.m. in the Chapel and our modern service at 10:30 a.m. in the Worship Center. We will have a special gift for each dad and an area for you to take a picture with your loved ones, too. At City View Church, there are amazing things for kids through our children’s ministry. Our pastoral staff and volunteers create an environment full of fun, safe, exciting, and powerful teachings from God’s Word for infants to 5th grade during both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. hours. We also have wonderful chances for you to build community through connect classes that are available for all ages at 9 a.m. Pray about whom to invite, and bring them with you as well. This money is enough to feed at least 4.8 billion people a day. Every year, Hollywood releases roughly 600 movies and makes $10 billion in profit. And how much does the porn industry make in movies? Roughly 13,000 films and close to $15 billion in profit. The porn industry makes more money than Major League Baseball, the NFL and the NBA combined. Unfortunately, we are living in a sex-filled culture like never before, similar to the days of the Roman Empire—but worse. We continue in our seven-part series called “The 7 - Going from Darkness to the Light” this Sunday, June 9th, at City View Church. In Part 6, I will discuss the issue of Lust: A sin that can be lethal to one’s life. You do not want to miss this timely message that God has laid on my heart for both the churched and the unchurched. Do you like your birthday? Most of us would say yes to this question because we love gifts. But have you ever been disappointed by the gifts you received and found yourself wanting more? Or have you ever seen an unsatisfied kid on December 26th? It’s the day after the biggest gift-giving day of all time, yet somehow not enough gifts are given to satisfy our longing for more. The root issue: greed. It plagues our heart and keeps us from the peaceful posture of contentment. When you graduated from high school or college, you probably set out to earn more and have a bigger bank account. But if you are anything like me, you see how fleeting money can really be. As we celebrate all of our students this Sunday and send them off from high school and college, our prayer is that they will not be caught in a trap of greed. Many of us think we have issues with our finances, issues with our work, issues with our studies, issues with our family. But really if we boil down the unsettled peace, we will find the real issue – an unsatisfied heart. An unsatisfied heart is one that is filled with desire for more. Greed cannot be tamed and greed cannot be controlled. Greed, in its nature, is an abuser and controller, making you its slave! As we continue our series on “The 7,” I have asked Pastor Stevie Nix to speak this Sunday, June 2, in our 8 am service in the chapel and in our 10:30 am service in the worship center. Pastor Stevie is going to speak to us on the topic of greed and help us find out which is controlling our heart – the greed for more, or the Spirit of God prompting us to give more, rather than seek more. I recall in high school one time when I and some friends went to the Sizzler Restaurant for their all-you-can-eat shrimp feast. Man, we had church chowing down all their shrimp delicacies. I recall one of my friends, Javier, who was a diver at a local San Antonio High School and got a scholarship to Texas A&M University for diving. He ate so much shrimp that the manager of the restaurant asked him to stop eating all the food at their all-you-can-eat shrimp buffet. I kid you not; it was so funny to all of us that we nicknamed Javier “Buffet.” Man, I miss those high metabolism days, don’t you? But in all seriousness, gluttony is a sin that can turn pleasure into obsession if a person isn’t careful. We continue in our seven-part series called “The 7 - Going from Darkness to the Light” this Sunday, May 26th, at City View Church. We will be looking at several things from scripture about what food symbolizes, a misunderstanding about what gluttony is, areas of gluttony to guard against, and how to restrain yourself from our culture’s desire for more. This message will be preached in both our traditional service at 8:00 a.m. in the Chapel and our modern service at 10:30 a.m. in the Worship Center. You'll also learn the habits that make your faith life rewarding and effective, and how to share God's love with others. "I Have Decided" is a one-time class that will meet at 9 AM this Sunday, May 19 in the Fellowship Center Room 106 (located on the back, right-hand side of the room. Hope to see you there!
What an amazing response we have had to our two new styles of services: our traditional one-hour service at 8:00 a.m. in the chapel and our modern service at 10:30 a.m. in the worship center. We thank God for each of you as part of our wonderful church family who continually supports the vision and mission of City View. We continue in our new seven-part series this Sunday, May 5th, called “The 7 - Going From Darkness to the Light.” Our series will continue to examine certain sins that can miss up one’s life and character if never dealt with. This week I want to preach to you about the sin of “Anger: a sin that can lead to serious consequences.” We will discover why people usually get angry, where anger is most exhibited in one’s life, what Ephesians 4 warns us about anger, and how a person can overcome anger. I can’t wait to see you this Sunday and preach this powerful and timely message for the days in which we are living. Also, we will be receiving communion today and there will be amazing things for kids through our children’s ministry. Our pastoral staff and volunteers create an environment full of fun, safe, exciting and powerful teachings from God’s Word for babies to 5th grade during both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. hours. Hello Everyone! Our next session of Engage Growth Tracks classes starts this Sunday, May 5, at 9 AM. This is a great class where you will learn from Pastors of City View more about our church, our heart, and how you can get plugged in. We encourage you to take the class wether you are new or old to City View. After taking all 3 classes, you will be qualified to become a member of City View. If you have started the series but are missing one or two weeks, just come for the sessions you need. Check out the schedule and location in the art.
What an amazing service we had at 8 am for our traditional service that we launched today. We give God the glory for the great things, he is doing and look forward to our modern service at 10:30. Also, thank you to the SDPD for being on our campus today. You are loved and appreciated. We continue to pray for the Jewish temple in Poway and it’s congregation.
This Sunday, April 28 - we will be launching a new Sunday Service at 8 a.m. in the Chapel! 8:00am - Traditional Service | Chapel 9:00am - Connect Groups 10:30am - Modern Service | Worship Center There will not be children’s ministry during the traditional service time because it is only an hour long. Both services will have the same teaching from God’s word but the worship styles and other aspects will be different. Our connect classes will be at 9 a.m. as usually.
At some time or another we all struggle with sin. But God wants to teach us ways to overcome and handle pride, envy, gluttony, sloth, anger, lust and greed. Discover through God’s grace, mercy, love and power how we can go from darkness to light. This will be the topic of “The 7,”a new seven-part series starting next Sunday, April 28.
Remember you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
Easter Sunday is almost here! Join us this Sunday, April 21 for wonderful celebrations of Jesus' resurrection! Our sunrise service will be down at the Civita's outdoor amphitheater at 7am. Come enjoy acoustic worship, a message by Pastor Troy, and fellowship with donuts and hot drinks. At 9am, Join us back at City View for fellowship with the entire family. We will be outside in front of the main office. There will be a donut wall, beverages, the Easter bunny and a fun Easter photo spot. (No 9am classes at this time) 10:30am, Kids will head to their classes for Easter celebrations. Our English Easter Celebration Service entitled 'The Greatest Comeback' will take place in the Worship Center, Español will meet in the Student Center, and Oromo will start at 10am in the Chapel.
Our new Wednesday Night Connect Groups session kicks off this Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30pm. Join us at City View Church, there are groups available for Children, Youth, Men, Women, and adults. Check out the specific groups we offer at cityviewsd.com.
